Four questions on the future of the Seleção.

A sense of strong disappointment still remains for Brazilian supporters. Sambafoot decided to question a coach, an agent, a marketing director and an ex international to try to find an explanation for the Seleção’s failure and to uncover what the future holds for the Auriverde.

What are your thoughts about Brazil’s performances in this World cup?
Brazil began the competition as hot favourites. But as soon as play started, the team did not perform well enough and soon lost that tag. I think that there was a problem in the preparation of the team. We faced too weak opposition in the friendlies when preparing for this world cup. We all thought that the Seleção would finish champions but in the end, they did not impress.
Do you think that Parreira should continue as Coach? If not who would you choose to replace him?
Yes, Parreira can continue, provided that he changes his philosophy of work. Now if the CBF decides to change staff, my preference would be towards Luiz Felipe Scolari or Paulo Autuori, who won the World Club Championship.
Players: Who has to leave? Who should remain?
Cafu, Roberto Carlos, Emerson and Ricardinho must leave the side considering their age. The remainder will provide a base for the next world cup with the proviso of being ready physically and psychologically.
Who are the players whom you would expect to see in the World cup 2010?
Cicinho, Juan, Lucio, Kaka, Ronaldinho, Robinho, Dida and Fred will form a good base for 2010. Ronaldo will have to show much more effort to take part in it. Then add a few new players, I like Schalke’s Rafinha.

The Seleção was very bad. They did not succeed in finding a formation that suited everyone. A team completely without direction, too much formed around defence... which does not stick at all with the Brazilian tradition!
Parreira should not continue. I think that his time with the Seleção is finished in company of Zagallo. My preferred coach would be Scolari, that’s all Brazil’s wish. But most probably it will be Wanderley Luxemburgo because he works in Brazil and is seen as reliable hands for the Seleção by the CBF.
Cafu, Roberto Carlos, Emerson, Ronaldo and Juninho must leave. Ronaldinho, Kaka, Adriano, Cicinho and Fred represent the future of our Seleção. For the new ones, I see well Rafinha, Nilmar and Carlos Alberto of Corinthians.

I think that the Seleção has performed badly for several years. In 2002, Brazil won the world title following the elimination of the great footballing nations and thanks to the personality of Felipão. However, the Brazilian press does not tackle their problems with objectivity. If the Brazilian players are the best in their clubs and then they do not manage to form as a true team during a competition, then surely the fault lies with the coach, who must be replaced.
I found it absurd not to play Robinho or Cicinho, who for most games gave way for players who were too old, like Cafu and Roberto Carlos. As for Ronaldinho, he was misused. To have the best player in the world in his team and not to give him the optimal conditions to perform is just stupidity without name.
For me, the coach should be experienced in European football. Only Felipe Scolari could really claim that and with his past with Brazil he is the sensible choice.
The majority of the squad will be back for 2010 but hopefully with a different philosophy of play.

This world cup was a real disappointment for Brazil. I hoped, as all Brazilians did, to see a true team but it was the reverse that occurred with too many individual players and many errors in the play.
I do not know if Parreira will continue as coach but if he leaves I think that he will have an important position within the CBF. We should give the chance to a new coach, like was the case with Germany who trusted Klinsmann. He showed all his knowledge of football while assembling a true team because he knows the psychology of the players; he played enough time to understand what’s needed.
I am not a good person for saying who should remain or leave but it is up to the players to carry out their own self-criticism and to call themselves into question.
I think that players like Dida, Lucio, Juan, Robinho, Cicinho and Gilberto will form the base for the next World cup. However they will have to show a little more togetherness and application if Brazil wants to win the next world cup. |
