La Liga Best XI

Riquelme, Canizares and Jesus Navas were the stars this week, while Ronaldinho misses out for once, but only by his high standards. Abhishek Thakur selects his best XI…
Goalkeeper
1 Santi Canizares (Valencia) The former Real Madrid and Spain No. 1 was brilliant off his line whenever Baiano seemed to be onto something, and not once did he misjudge the pace or flight of the ball. That, combined with super reflexes, and hands that would have been forgiven for spilling some of those rockets, make him stand out like he has done so often in the past.
Defenders
2 Cortes (Mallorca) The right back was up there time and again, creating chances left and right, in a match which Mallorca dominated, and should have won, but for some woeful finishing. A fantastic header which came back out after striking the inside of the post, and a wonderful cut back to leave Victor clear on goal were the highlights.
3 Gonzalo Rodrigues (Villarreal): Yet another dominant and ever alert performance against Tristan, Valeron and Munitis allowed Villarreal to hang in there when Deportivo came out all guns blazing. The young defender seems to be relishing leading a defense with everyone else over 30. No wonder Milan have him in their sights!
4 Carles Puyol (Barcelona): The Blaugrana skipper put in another solid performance, allowing the forwards to create magic at the other end. Minus a few goals scored at the other end, he is pretty much to Barcelona what Terry is to Chelsea.
5 Raul Bravo (Real Madrid): What can you say! Barely on the pitch for 15 minutes, the oft berated Spaniard made one of the most telling contributions this week, saving his coach’s job by turning around what seemed to be a hopeless situation for the Merengues. Bringing him on for Robinho with Real Madrid two goals down was downright gutsy from Luxemburgo, but as they say, ’no guts, no glory’.
Midfielders
6 Peter Luccin (Atletico Madrid): With much of the talk being focused on the possible arrival of Maniche, the ex-Celta midfielder couldn’t have chosen a better moment to demonstrate his worth to Bianchi, not only in defense but also his ability to link up the play through the middle.
7 Xavi (Barcelona): He has the highest number and percentage of succesful passes in La Liga two seasons running. 77 from 82 against a hapless Racing Santander pretty much sums up the quantity and quality of his involvement on Sunday night, and why, almost every coach considers him Barcelona’s metaphorical engine.
8 Jesus Navas (Sevilla): From bursting onto the scene last season, to having Real Madrid enquire about him in the summer, to becoming Sevilla’s organizer and creater-in-chief, the 19-yr-old has certainly come a long way. A fantastic performance against Zaragoza to take his team up to fourth in La Liga will surely have turned a few more heads. Watch out for him as the season progresses!
9 Riquelme (Villarreal): We missed him! The Argentine playmaker returned from injury with a bang to guide his team to victory at the Riazor, and to third position in La Liga. The thought of watching him try to break down Barcelona in a week’s time has me preoccupied already.
Forwards
10 Oscar De Paula (Real Sociedad): With Kovacevic out injured and Nihat off colour, it was Sociedad’s perennial sub who turned up at the right places at the right time, winning the penalty for their first, and then opportunistically heading in the second to send Real Madrid into crisis. But for his defense letting him down at the death, he would surely have been player of the week.
11 Samuel Eto’o (Barcelona): He picked up the ball in his own half, sold the dummy by pretending to amble along looking for support, and suddenly blitzed passed five scurrying defenders to score a stunning goal. His exquisite pass to set up Messi for the second, and an unselfish touch for Guily, who should have made it Barca’s fifth, highlight a wonderful night for the Cameroonian.
Those Who Came Close
Ayala (Valencia) for a great performance against Baiano.
Sorin (Villarreal) for complementing Riquelme perfectly through his more advanced role.
Luis Prieto (Bilbao) for a wonderful, wonderful free-kick to drag his team out of last place.
Paunovic (Getafe) For two superbly taken goals to pull his team out from a rut.
Vincente (Valencia) for a busy performance, and a delightful free-kick to create the second goal.
Assuncao (Betis) For yet another scorcher of a goal, and almost winning it for Betis with his second, only to be denied by the inside of the bar.
