Casillas Finally Extends With Real

Iker Casillas has finally agreed a contract extension with Real Madrid after months of speculation over his future.

The Spanish number one has agreed a new contract that expires in 2011, when he will be 30.

"I am I happy and that is the only thing that matters,” he said "I hope that in 2010 we return to renew again until 2016.”

The player’s agent, Ginés Carvajal, added on Radio Marca: “We were convinced that this was going to happen. It is clear that the president wanted to fix it. They look after their interests and we do ours, but in the end we have arrived at an agreement to renew.”

Casillas’ previous deal was due to expire at the end of the season.

Defender Ivan Helguera has extended his contract with Real Madrid until 2009, the Primera Liga side said on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old centre-back, whose original deal was due to expire in June 2006, followed in the footsteps of goalkeeper Iker Casillas who committed himself to the club until 2011 just a few hours earlier.

Helguera, who can also play in midfield, has been a fixture in the first team since joining Real Madrid from Espanyol in 1999, winning two league titles and two European Cups.

The Cantabrian first caught the eye while playing for second division Albacete in the 1996-97 campaign and made a surprise move to AS Roma the following season.

However, he failed to make his mark in Italy and returned to Spain to sign for Espanyol a year later having made just nine appearances in the Serie A.

Helguera quickly recaptured his form for the Barcelona-based side and made the move to Real Madrid in 1999 where he quickly became a regular in the first team, first as a midfielder and then as a centre-back.

Renowned for speaking his mind, Helguera has voiced his criticisms of the club's big-name recruitment policy but has become a favourite at the Bernabeu for his committed, never-say-die performances in the Real back four.

He has won 47 caps for Spain, but was dropped by coach Luis Aragones for the World Cup qualifier against Belgium in October 2004 and has faded out of the reckoning for a place in the national squad for Germany 2006.

Vicente del Bosque has welcomed comments made by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez about a possible return to the club.

The championship winning coach left in acrimonious circumstances three years ago, but Perez said yesterday: "Clearly, Del Bosque could return here."

"Why not? He is a Madridista and is excellent at his job."

Del Bosque said: "It is always flattering to hear such things. But it isn't the first time Perez has said this."
