Alvaro Recoba insists he will return to Uruguay at the end of the season if he doesn’t extend his contract with Inter.
The attacking enigma has been linked with moves to Sampdoria and Stuttgart, but he maintains he’ll remain at the San Siro or head back to his homeland in the summer.
"I hope to stay," Recoba, whose contract expires in June 2006, told Sky Italia on Friday afternoon.
"But I don’t want to remain here just to stay, I want to do so with the objective of winning something with this club.
"If I had to leave then I would go back to Uruguay. I could find another team here in Italy, but I wouldn’t out of respect to the President."
The 29-year-old shares a special relationship with Massimo Moratti and the latter has hinted that El Chino will be going nowhere.
"Recoba’s contractual situation is between the club and the player, but I think they will meet up soon," stated Moratti recently.
"He is a player with great quality," continued the oil baron. "He knows how to be decisive and he is a pleasure to watch."
Moratti’s vote of confidence in the South American has coincided with a much-needed return to form for the player.
He’s recently broke back into the starting line-up and scored the opener in the 2-1 win at Messina on Sunday.
Recoba, once the world’s highest paid player, has been at Inter since his 1997 switch from Nacional Montevideo.
However, his best spell in Serie A arguably took place during his six-month loan stint at Venezia in 1999.
The attacker scored 10 goals in 19 games to keep Walter Novellino’s side in the top-flight at the time.
