Given wants improvement
Newcastle keeper Shay Given admits The Magpies are not performing to their potential, but claims the club cannot blame injuries for their current plight.
The Magpies appeared to turn a corner under Graeme Souness when stringing four wins together at the end of October and beginning of November, but they have turned down a blind alley since the international break and have lost three of their last four games.
It would have been four straight defeats had Aston Villa's Gareth Barry not ballooned a penalty at St James' Park on Saturday, and Given feels the club are not performing to their potential.
"Another season of under-achievement? You can't deny that," he said.
"We have got to improve because it's not good enough for a club of this size and stature. We need to get back into Europe, we miss Europe."
Given claims the players are striving to turn things around and feels it would be folly to axe Souness despite sections of the club's fans demanding a change at the top.
"We will be back on the training ground on Monday morning preparing for the Arsenal game, that won't change," added the Irish keeper.
"Getting rid of the manager is not always the answer. We have to stick together. At the end we could have lost it. The manager probably deserved that little bit of luck.
"Pressure is only a word, you have just got to do your job. Confidence isn't sky high with losing three in a row and it was very important that we took something from the game."
The Magpies have been plagued by injuries this term, as have other clubs, but Given claims they cannot hide behind their injured players.
"We have got to dig deep," he stressed. "In an ideal world we would have all our players fit and you would see our real team, but other teams are the same and we have got to get on with it. Other teams have injuries and suspensions.
"If you are waiting for Kieron Dyer you could be waiting all season because he has been injured for so long."
