The Antonio Cassano transfer saga now seems increasingly likely to find a solution with Inter, who are reportedly ready to sign the player in January, in part-exchange for Francesco Toldo.
Massimo Moratti is said to be ready to spend between £4m and £5m on the want-away striker in a move that would enable Roma to cash in on the 23-year-old before he leaves for free in the summer.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled on Monday to uphold the ban preventing Roma from signing any players during the New Year transfer window or receiving any players in part-exchange for any individuals it sells.
But it is thought that while Roma will not be able to replace the controversial forward - whom they currently value at £8.1m - with any playing personnel immediately after Christmas, Inter will offer former Italy goalkeeper Toldo as part of the deal in the summer.
The Milan-based club, who are still mulling over the renewal of Alvaro Recoba’s contract, will be without Obafemi Martins for a period of around two months at the start of 2006.
He will be away on African Nations Cup duty in January and February, and - with goals having been hard to come by this season - acquiring Cassano is seen as the ideal solution for them.
Cassano himself is a boyhood Inter supporter and has always favoured a move to the Nerazzurri above any other. Having fallen out of favour with Roma and its supporters, the sooner he leaves the better it will be for all parties. |
