SVEN GORAN ERIKSSON says there are only THREE seats left on England’s World
Cup plane.
The England boss has already picked 20 of his 23-man squad and now there is
a mad scramble for the remaining places available for next summer’s finals
in Germany.
Eriksson is still looking for a fourth striker, a cover defender and a
goalkeeper.
Speaking at the German Embassy, where he was a special guest, Eriksson said:
“I could pick at least 20 now, then I would have to start thinking
harder.”
The big battle is for the striker’s role with Spurs’ Jermain Defoe,
Charlton’s Darren Bent and Manchester City’s Darius Vassell hoping to join
Michael Owen, Wayne Rooney and Peter Crouch.
There is one defensive role left to sort out, provided Wayne Bridge can
prove his fitness at Chelsea, and that will be between Luke Young and the
perpetually injured Jonathan Woodgate.
If Woodgate starts playing regularly for Real Madrid he will go as a central
defender with Jamie Carragher switching to right-back as cover for Gary
Neville.
Otherwise, Charlton’s Young will deputise for Neville.
Eriksson added: “You look at Bridge and question how many games he will
have for Chelsea, likewise Kieron Richardson at Manchester United.
“And what will happen with Woodgate? There’s plenty to think about.
“It’s a decision you take in May when the league has finished and you see
how many games they’ve played. I can’t decide today.
“If the World Cup was next week I would, but it’s not necessary now.
“You always hope a new player will come on, although that’s unlikely.
“I’m open-minded and it is important to pick the best players in May.”
As far as the keepers are concerned, Eriksson may be forced to take
error-prone David James as there is no experienced back-up to Spurs’ No 1
Paul Robinson.
After that, third-choice will be between Robert Green, Chris Kirkland, and
Scott Carson.
Eriksson believes other countries are already running scared of England.
He said: “Teams know the damage we can do to them and most of them will not
want to play us.
“That’s the difference from 2002. We have a much better team than we had
in Japan.”
Heis also helping the FA campaign to get England fans more tickets for the
finals.
The FA is limited to 3,000 tickets for each group game against Paraguay,
Trinidad & Tobago and Sweden.
Eriksson added: “It is a job for the FA’s directors to talk to FIFA
president Sepp Blatter.
“But if I bump into him in a corridor, I will certainly ask him to
listen.” |
