Victor Obinna’s decision whether or not to play for Nigeria in the African Nations Cup could have serious implications for his future.
Obinna’s sensational form for Chievo this season has caught the attention of Inter who have been looking to bring him to the San Siro in January, as a replacement for Obafemi Martins, who leaves on African Nations Cup duty.
However, Inter’s plans to recruit the teenage striker – who they actually part own – have been scuppered by Obinna’s surprise call-up to the same Nigeria squad as Martins.
Now the emerging African star must choose whether to represent his country or earn a glamorous move to the Nerazzurri to help their Serie A and Champions League cause.
Should Obinna – who is said to be very settled with the Flying Donkeys – prefer to play for his country, Inter will have to re-evaluate their January recruitment drive.
A young striker is required to provide back up for Adriano, Alvaro Recoba and Julio Cruz and players who have caught the eye include Fiorentina’s Valeri Bojinov, Lecce’s Mirko Vucinic and, of course, Antonio Cassano – who seems, at present, to be close to a move to Real Madrid.
There is also the option of bringing Marco Di Vaio back to Italy after his unhappy spell at Valencia.
