you need phonetics (kind of linguistics). correct pronunciation 'should be' very important... sometimes when i talk to foreigner, they can't even understand my simple words. i guess it is because of my incorrect pronun... for example.. 'apple' can't be pronouned correctly by many many. i am wondering why we are not taught phonetics in the secondary education.

This example (apple) I pick up from one book called something like (Incorrect pronunciation committed by hk ppl'). (Sorry, I don't have stat for how often hkppl pronoun incorrectly.) Of course, if a hkppl say 'apple' with the first one to another hkppl, the hkppl still can understand it easily since we get used to it already. But for foreigners such a 'minor' mistake is enough to cause miscommunication.
