Metatarsal agony for striker Owen


Newcastle and England striker Michael Owen could be out for several months after fracturing his fifth metatarsal bone.

The 26-year-old was substituted at half-time during today's Barclays Premiership match against Tottenham.


The news will be a massive blow to Newcastle, who spent £17million on the player in August.

Newcastle boss Graeme Souness said: 'It's a mighty blow. It's an absolute disaster for him and an absolute disaster for the club. It's a dark day for us.'

Owen has struggled with injuries in the past, suffering hamstring trouble at various points in his Liverpool career after first pulling up in a game at Leeds in April 1999.

He has scored seven goals in nine starts for the Magpies since joining them from Real Madrid, including a hat-trick against West Ham on December 17.

To compound Newcastle's problems, goalkeeper Shay Given has a suspected broken thumb.

Graeme Souness, who bemoaned the 'absolute disaster' of Owen's injury, admitted: 'They were both poor goals to concede. Mido didn't mean to shoot in that manner , but we had opportunities to clear the ball.

'We conceded two goals due to individuals not doing their jobs properly. It's something we can talk about and work on, but you've got to be confident out there to take the responsibility when it comes your way. We didn't deal with that very well.

'It doesn't take its toll on me. I've been in the game a long time. There's a lot worse things that happen out there off the pitch. But obviously it's a dark day for us though, given what's happened to Michael.'

Owen set for operation on broken metatarsal

England and Newcastle striker Michael Owen is set to have an operation on the broken bone in his right foot, according to Sky Sports News.

Owen picked up the injury against Tottenham in yesterday's 2-0 defeat at White Hart Lane.

However he insists he will be ready for the World Cup this summer.

The 26-year-old England international, who broke his fifth metatarsal, could be out for 'several months', according to Magpies boss Graeme Souness.

Owen told Sky Sports News: 'It's disappointing but everyone gets their fair share, if there's any consolation I've got plenty of time before the World Cup.'

When asked if the injury would affect his World Cup, Owen replied: 'Not from what all the experts are telling me.

'There are no quick ways, it's two and a half months or three months, I don't know what it is but it's the same for everyone. Loads of people have had it done - (Wayne) Rooney, (David) Beckham, Gary Neville and Stevie Gerrard.'

England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson will monitor Owen's recovery.

He told the Football Association website: 'Obviously I'm very disappointed for Michael. It's very bad luck for him and for Newcastle United.

'Michael is a fantastic striker and a very important player for his club and for England.

'I hope he returns to fitness as soon as possible and I will follow his progress very closely.'

Souness said: 'Michael Owen has broken his fifth metatarsal in his right foot. He's had it X-rayed here [at White Hart Lane] and he will obviously be out for several months now.

'It's a similar injury to David Beckham's [in 2002]. It's an almighty blow for us.

'Even when you're not playing particularly well, you feel that you can win games with Michael in your team. I can't tell you how big a miss he will be.

'It's an absolute disaster for him and for us.'

Beckham recovered from his similar injury in 2002 and played in the World Cup, although he was not fully fit and appeared to be less effective.

If Owen was ruled out of any England games, Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch and Darren Bent would be in contention to replace him alongside Wayne Rooney, but none of them can rival his experience or goalscoring potential.
