I've nothing to prove

JERMAINE JENAS will tangle with Newcastle today, insisting: I have nothing at all to prove to Graeme Souness.
Jenas, 22, saw his 2002 transfer from Nottingham Forest to St James’ Park turn into a nightmare, as he failed to live with the fan pressure in the North East.
But he reckons he got the decision just right when he moved down to Tottenham for £7m back in August.
Jenas has achieved his aim of resurrecting his career and been a revelation alongside Michael Carrick at the heart of the Spurs midfield.
And when Newcastle arrive at White Hart Lane, Jenas will be doing everything he can to ensure a miserable New Year for his former team-mates.
The England midfielder has recovered from the feeling he was ‘living in a goldfish bowl’ on Tyneside.
Yet despite failing to produce his best form during his three-year spell with the Toon, he is adamant he had no problem with boss Souness.
Jenas declared: “I don’t feel I have anything to prove to anyone.
“I left Newcastle for purely footballing reasons and just want to enjoy my football and keep going well for Tottenham.
“It had nothing to do with Souness. I know what my personality is like and I just felt I needed a fresh start.
“I had a good time, yet felt I had hit a bit of a ceiling.
“The club and myself had gone as far we could. I felt I needed to develop quicker and Spurs could offer me that under Martin Jol Laughing . I have no doubts whatsoever that this has been the best move for me. I am thoroughly enjoying myself here.
“It will be great for me to see a few of the old faces from Newcastle. But the most important thing is getting a result for Tottenham and coming away with a win.”
Despite their surprise 2-0 defeat at West Brom on Wednesday, Tottenham remain fourth in the Premiership and are determined to secure a European place come the end of the season.
And with the transfer window set to reopen on Sunday, Jenas is hoping boss Jol will bring in some new faces who can help the club become even stronger in the second half of the season.
He added: “It is important we try to stay in the top four. We have a good squad of players and need to stay in the mix over this busy period of games.
“It will be great if the club strengthens the squad in January. If you look at the league, the top sides all have big squads able to deal with the amount of games thrown at them.
“If you have a big squad, then it certainly tends to help come the end of the season.”
