Breaking News: Reds Land French Left-Back
Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed United are close to signing the French international full-back Patrice Evra.
The Reds boss told ManUtd.com today that the transfer of the 24 year-old is all but completed. If he passes a medical, he could make his debut as early as next Wednesday, when United face Blackburn at Ewood Park in the Carling Cup semi-final first leg.
"The deal is done and he'll have a medical on Monday," said Sir Alex. "We've known about him for quite a while and he's improved every year.
"He was a centre-forward as a kid, before moving out to the left wing. He's been playing at left-back for the last three years at Monaco and we've been watching him all season particularly since Gabi (Heinze) got his injury.
"I said a few weeks ago that we lacked options with the likes of Gabi and Quinton Fortune out for a while. It was therefore important to bring a left-sided player in.
"Patrice is naturally left-footed and very quick. His age is right and he gives us a different option at left-back."

United have been in negotiations with Evra's current club AS Monaco and he now looks set to become Fergie's second signing of the January transfer window.
Serbia & Montenegro international Nemanja Vidic had his work permit application approved this week and he completed his move from Spartak Moscow to Old Trafford.
The centre-half is currently undergoing a special fitness programme having not played since last November.
"He's only doing endurance work at the moment," confirmed Fergie. "He's following a programme with our fitness coach similar to the kind we use during pre-season.
"It's difficult to say when he'll be ready to play, it depends on how he comes through the next week or so. He won't play against either Burton or Blackburn.
"We'll have a better idea when we get him involved in the football part which will be next week sometime." |
