Milan transfer chief Adriano Galliani admits that Christian Vieri has requested a move to play first team football, which could take him to Spain or England.
“Vieri is very happy at Milan, but in a World Cup year he would like to play more regularly,” explained the Vice-President.
“He is torn and I understand his situation. In any case, this is an issue that will be decided over the next two to three days and will not drag on beyond that.”
The Italian international has barely made a mark since joining the Rossoneri in a shock free transfer from rivals Inter in the summer.
Locked out by the form of Andriy Shevchenko, Alberto Gilardino and the newly recovered Pippo Inzaghi, he has been mainly relegated to the bench.
A January transfer now looks likely and an overseas option is top of his list. While a return to Atletico Madrid, where he was top scorer with 24 goals in as many games in 1997, has been suggested, the most recent reports highlight a move to Tottenham.
“He is 33 years old and this will probably be his last World Cup, so he feels that he must safeguard that experience by playing more first team football,” added Galliani. “These are all perfectly understandable considerations.”
Other Premiership options for the centre-forward include Newcastle, Birmingham and Manchester City, though The Guardian claims that White Hart Lane is the key to his loan deal.
“I will only say that if Vieri does stay, then he’ll focus all his attention on doing well with Milan. All he needs is a little patience and a brace of goals to get the critics off his back, but any eventuality will be dealt with in a climate of friendship and understanding.”
Coach Carlo Ancelotti also hinted that a departure – albeit an amicable one – was on the cards.
“Nobody here has any intention of dumping Vieri,” assured the tactician. “I would be happy if he stayed, even if I cannot give any guarantees on more first team football.”
