The news that Inter have been dreading arrived today with the call-up of Victor Obinna for Nigeria’s African Cup of Nations campaign.
This latest development will come as a blow to Coach Roberto Mancini, who has made no secret of his side’s need for an accomplished striker to finish off the numerous chances the Nerazzurri have been creating this season.
Obinna was set to join from Chievo this month, but such has been his impact on Serie A this season that his national side have decided to call upon the 19-year-old in addition to Inter’s other Nigerian front-man Obafemi Martins.
Mancio is now left short of attacking options with Adriano, Julio Cruz and Alvaro Recoba – who is out injured at present – the only remaining strikers available for the next two months.
The San Siro side are now sure to dip into the transfer market again with Udinese’s David Di Michele heading a shopping list including Fiorentina’s Valeri Bojinov - whose agent yesterday insisted his player was staying in Florence – Djibril Cissé of Liverpool and Brazilian youngster Rafael Sobis.
Nigeria have also called up Udinese midfielder Chris Obodo and Palermo striker Stephen Makinwa.
