Sebastien Frey’s injury for Fiorentina against Juventus last night will keep him sidelined for three months, according to the latest reports.
Frey partially ruptured his knee ligaments in a clash with Juve striker Marcelo Zalayeta in the 4-1 Italian Cup defeat at the Stadio Delle Alpi and, after medical tests, it is almost certain he will miss at least the next 12 weeks – if not the rest of the season.
The news comes as a heavy blow to Cesare Prandelli’s side, who are hoping to build on a fantastic start to the season by finishing their campaign with a place in next season’s Champions League.
With the unproven second goalkeeper Marco Roccati having made just three appearances for the Viola, the Tuscan side are now in the market for a goalkeeping replacement, with Inter’s Francesco Toldo in the frame for a possible return to his old club in the January transfer window.
The former Italy shot-stopper has endured a miserable time at Inter this season, having become second choice to Julio Cesar and making just one League appearance for the Nerazzurri so far.
The 34-year-old is out of contract in the summer and has made no secret of his desire to move away from the San Siro.
Benfica and Palermo have both been linked with the Padova-born player, but with the Rosanero having only recently swapped Cristiano Lupatelli for Parma’s Matteo Guardalben, the Sicilians have now turned their attentions to buying a new striker.
After eight successful years at Fiorentina, Toldo would welcome the chance to return to the club where he made his name and first earned international recognition, although his agent Claudio Pasqualin has suggested recently that his client could be on the way to Everton. |
