Santos held in Luxemburgo's return

RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan 12 (Reuters) - Former Real Madrid coach Wanderlei Luxemburgo made an unremarkable return to Brazilian football on Thursday as Santos were held 1-1 at Sao Bento in the Sao Paulo state championship.

Santos had moved swiftly to appoint Luxemburgo following his exit from Spain, banking on the coach to reproduce the formula that delivered the Brazilian championship to the club in 2004.

Luxemburgo also inherited a squad recently strengthened by the arrival of 14 new players, and his team are considered one of the favourites for the state title.


With five of these new players on show, Santos struggled to gel against Sao Bento, with potential match-winners such as Luizao and Giovanni subdued.

Santos broke the deadlock in a scrappy game when Luciano Henrique collected a lobbed pass from Kleber and chipped over advancing goalkeeper Fabiano on 71 minutes.

But the home team reacted swiftly and Genilson scored with a powerful left-footed strike.

Luxemburgo's coaching record in Brazil includes five state titles, including wins with Palmeiras in 1993, 1994 and 1996, plus a record five national titles.
