Real Madrid are reported to be ready to step up their interest in Argentine starlet Fernando Gago
Real, along with arch rivals Barcelona, have been following the 19-year-old for some time, while Premiership champions Chelsea have also been credited with an interest in the midfielder.
Widely regarded as one of the hottest prospects in South American football, the Boca Juniors star is being tipped to make Argentina's World Cup squad next summer and played a leading role in his club clinching the Torneo Apertura trophy recently.
Real have already been in contact with Boca regarding the teenager and now seem ready to test the Argentine outfit's resolve.
Gago has been compared to Barcelona legend Josep Guardiola in his style of play and Real believe he would be ideally suited to life in the Spanish league.
For their part, Boca have made it clear they have no intention of letting the youngster leave at present with president Mauricio Macri recently stating the player would be going nowhere until 2007 at the earliest.
However, a substantial bid from Real, who are also monitoring Gago's Argentina Under-20 international team-mate Sergio Aguero, could prove difficult to resist for Boca.
The player himself has already revealed a desire to play in Spain, and is understood to have a preference for Real over Catalan rivals Barcelona.
