Coach Roberto Mancini has hinted that Cagliari’s Mauro Esposito has been identified as Inter’s next signing. "He could be joining us," he admitted last night.
The Nerazzurri have been seeking a forward for a number of weeks, having seen their attacking options reduced by the departure of Obafemi Martins and Victor Obinna to the African Nations Cup and injury to Alvaro Recoba.
Inter’s first-choice target David Di Michele opted to move to Palermo ahead of the Milan giants in order to get regular football and scored twice on his debut for the Rosanero last night.
Although he has failed to live up to the exploits of last season, when he scored 16 goals for Cagliari in 34 matches, Esposito appears to be next on Inter’s January shopping list.
He also announced his credentials with a goal during his side’s 3-2 defeat to Mancini’s men at the San Siro last weekend.
The Naples-born marksman - only two days ago - revealed a desire to play for his home-town club next season, but a move to Inter could prove to be the making of the diminutive 26-year-old, who can play up front or on either wing.
"Esposito is a good player," said Mancini of the man who would cost around £3.5m. "He could be joining us."
One player who will not be on his way to Milan in the near future is Lazio midfielder Cesar – who looks unlikely to renew his contract in the capital.
The Brazilian had been linked with a switch to Inter over the last few days but Mancio moved to deny talk of any deal for the 31-year-old.
"At this moment in time he doesn’t interest us," he said. "We are looking at other players." |
