Manchester United's midfield crisis could lead to a loan bid for Milan's Switzerland international Johann Vogel.
After being rocked by the news that Paul Scholes is out for the season and John O'Shea has broken two ribs, Sir Alex Ferguson's options look extremely restricted in the middle of the park.
The likes of Roy Keane, Phil Neville, Kleberson and Eric Djemba-Djemba have departed in recent times with only the conversion of Alan Smith and O'Shea into midfielders helping to ease the problem a little.
Ferguson has also agreed to loan out several candidates to deputise, such as Liam Miller, Richie Jones and David Jones.
It all adds up to a headache for the Scot with the transfer window set to close next week.
Chief executive David Gill has made it clear that United will pursue top-quality midfielders in the summer but it is understood that a short-term solution could be found this month if the right player is made available.
Agent Angelo Semeraro told skysports.com that Vogel is still getting used to life in Milan but remained tight-lipped on the prospect of any move to Old Trafford.
"There is nothing we can say on this subject," Semeraro informed skysports.com. "Johann has only been where he is for five months and is still adapting."
Vogel has found first team opportunities limited at Milan recently but insists he is happy to remain with the Rossoneri.
"Already clubs have been linked but, for me, Milan is the paradise," said Vogel recently.
"This professionalism, the organisation. Everything is done for the player so he can concentrate completely on the football."
The 28-year-old signed a three-year contract with Milan in May after impressing during PSV Eindhoven's UEFA Champions League run last term.
Ferguson kept close tabs on PSV before bringing Park Ji-sung to United so he will be more than aware of Vogel's capabilities.
