Tottenham are in talks with Juventus about signing Jonathan Zebina, who is primarily a right-back but can also play at centre-half. The deal hinges on whether Spurs can convince the Juventus coach, Fabio Capello, to sell the 27-year-old France international before the summer.
Zebina has made few appearances this season, partly because of knee and eye injuries, but Capello is reluctant to allow him to leave this month. Tottenham hope to push a deal through before the deadline as they push for a place in Europe.
Newcastle United have privately dismissed suggestions that Sven-Goran Eriksson is poised to replace Graeme Souness in the summer as "nonsense" but the Scot's job remains in jeopardy. Souness claims to have been buoyed by "individual messages of support" from Newcastle fans.
The referee Graham Poll has informed the Football Association he saw no evidence of misconduct during the tunnel bust-up at Old Trafford on Wednesday. Greater Manchester police have also told the FA they will be making no complaint.
An early goal from the striker Mathew Amoah revived Ghana's hopes at the African Nations Cup finals yesterday when they overcame Senegal 1-0 in their Group D match. Nigeria scored twice in four minutes to beat a stubborn Zimbabwe 2-0 and stay on course for the quarter-finals. Christian Obodo headed the Super Eagles in front in the 57th minute and the substitute John Obi Mikel added the second with a scorching drive four minutes later for his first international goal.
