New Palermo boss Giuseppe Papadopulo is confident that he can lead the Rosanero into Europe this season.
The tactician made the boast on Monday after he was officially unveiled as Gigi Del Neri’s successor, following his sacking this weekend, at the Stadio Renzo Barbera.
"I’m optimistic," said the Coach. "I firmly believe that this side deserves to qualify for the UEFA Cup again.
"I hope to just give this team the one more per cent which they are currently in need of right now."
Papadopulo has been out of the game since he was shown the door at Lazio in the summer, yet he’s delighted to be back on the Serie A stage.
"I had basically settled for the fact that I wouldn’t be working, but I waited and Palermo have given me the opportunity to take charge of an ambitious team," he added. "I have found a squad of absolute value here."
Papadopulo is set to bring in a little more defensive strength to the side, seeing as Del Neri was openly criticised by President Maurizio Zamparini for their colander-like performances this term.
But while Del Neri was a disciple of the 4-4-2 system, Papa has intimated that his tactics will be varied.
"There is no need to just focus on one particular formation," the Coach stated. "We need to be able to adapt to the needs of a game and the characteristics of our opponents."
Papadopulo has only been given a six-month contract but the man insists the length of his deal is of no importance.
"I don’t know whether an 18-month agreement would have been better, but I am not looking past June 30," he explained.
The new man will make his debut on the Sicilian bench in Tuesday’s Coppa Italia match against Milan. Palermo lost the first leg 1-0. |
