French ace in United revelation
Monaco playmaker Olivier Kapo claims he was on the brink of signing for Manchester United before the close of the transfer window.
Kapo is currently on loan at Monaco from Juventus, but is at odds with the French side's coach Francesco Guidolin.
He was keen to leave before the end of January and reportedly rejected a move to Messina, while Bordeaux and Deportivo La Coruna were also interested.
But talks were most advanced with Premiership giants United, who were desperately trying to bring in a midfielder during the transfer window.
Kapo has revealed he was ready to undergo a medical and sign a deal at Old Trafford, only for Monaco to put the kibosh on the transfer.
"Before the match at Lens (on January 22), the coach told me: 'You have to find a new club because if you stay you will not play'," Kapo told L'Equipe TV.
"So I looked for a club.
"The most serious trail was Manchester United. It was almost settled.
"I had my plane tickets to have the medical examinations on January 30 and sign the next day.
"But, for darker reasons that happened behind my back, it was not settled.
"Now I am at Monaco I will work and then we will see. I never wanted to leave, people asked me to leave."
Kapo's stance that he is being squeezed out of Stade Louis II, though, has been challenged by Guidolin, who insists he did not press the France international into seeking a move.
Guidolin said: "I never asked him to leave. I talked with him calmly, right in the eyes.
"I am only watching the performances on the pitch. I hope Olivier will play well in the future, he still has three or four months to do it."
