Fergie rues Rio loss
Sir Alex Ferguson bemoaned his side's lack of presence in defence as Manchester United crashed out of the FA Cup in a 1-0 defeat to Liverpool.
The Reds triumphed at Anfield as Peter Crouch headed home in the first half, and Ferguson, who lost Alan Smith to a horrific broken leg late on, said the absence of Rio Ferdinand was crucial to his side as they failed to cope with the hosts' aerial bombardment.
The stopper failed to make the squad after sustaining a hamstring injury, and the United backline suffered some nervy moments as they saw their challenge for a 12th cup triumph ended.
Ferguson also insisted that The Red Devils succumbed only to bad luck after an improved second half display.
"Liverpool can play for only five minutes and win the game, that is the way they are," said Ferguson.
"They pump the ball into the box and with good set-piece delivery they keep you under pressure.
"We did not have enough height to cope with that, losing Rio was a blow. You need a bit of luck in the cup and I think it went against us this time.
"We dominated the second half, no question, but we should have done better in the first.
"They had one shot on goal which was saved by (Edwin) van der Sar before their winner, and as I say they only need to play for five minutes because that is the way they are because they keep such a tight ship at the back."
