Sissoko career in the balance

MOMO SISSOKO is being treated by eye specialists in London as Liverpool today tried to remain as upbeat as possible about his chances of recovery.
Sissoko travelled to the capital last night as fears grow regarding the seriousness of the blow he received in Lisbon on Tuesday.
There are now genuine concerns he could lose sight in his right eye, ending his career.
The Mali midfielder hasn't been able to see out of the eye since damaging the retina during an accidental clash with Benfica's Beto.
Sissoko has already effectively been ruled out for the rest of this season and Liverpool hope the situation doesn't get any worse.
It's hoped a more positive assessment can be made when the severe bruising calms down.
At this stage, no firm diagnosis can be made one way or the other.
"We don't want to sound too pessimistic because it's too early to tell. What Momo needs right now is our support and the best care he can get," chief executive Rick Parry said today.
"His right eye is closed down and it's been difficult to assess the damage because of the swelling and bleeding.
"However, it's too early to jump to conclusions. Obviously this is a very traumatic time for Momo and the club is in constant contact with his family and representatives. It's a very nasty injury.
"He's now in London being treated by the best specialists in the country."
Sissoko returned from Portugal yesterday where medical staff were particularly pessimistic, giving the player only a '20 to 30 per cent' chance of recovery. |
