Real Zaragoza 0-2 Barcelona
ZARAGOZA, February 25 (Primera Liga) - Barcelona moved nine points clear at the top of the Primera Liga with a hard-fought win over Real Zaragoza, but the match was overshadowed by racist abuse directed at Samuel Eto'o.
Barca's Cameroonian striker had started to walk off the pitch with around 13 minutes to go because of the abuse from the home fans but, having reached the touchline, he was persuaded by the referee and his fellow players to continue.
The episode was the latest in a string of racist incidents to have plagued Spanish football over the last few years.
Eto'o has been on the receiving end before - including at Zaragoza's La Romareda stadium following his goal in Barca's 4-1 win last season - while England's black players faced monkey chants from a section of Spain fans in a friendly in the Santiago Bernabeu in November 2004.
A number of Spanish clubs have also been fined for racist incidents from their fans, including Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Getafe.
The incident in Saturday's game not only proved to be the talking point of the match but it also proved to be the decisive one as, within a minute of Eto'o walking off, Barca had taken the lead.
Edmilson controlled a corner on his chest before firing a superb volley towards the top corner of the net.
Zaragoza goalkeeper Cesar Sanchez had no chance of saving the shot but Albert Celades, who was standing on the line, stuck up a hand to divert the ball onto the bar and away to safety.
That handball earned Celades an inevitable red card and gifted Barca a penalty, which their Brazilian playmaker Ronaldinho duly converted by sending Cesar the wrong way.
Three minutes later and Barca were celebrating a second goal, and it was not without a large sense of justice as Eto'o was instrumental in the move.
He broke down the right flank before firing in a perfect cross that Swedish international Henrik Larsson turned home on the half-volley at the near post.
That wrapped up the points and helped Barca move further clear at the summit, although second-placed Valencia can trim that lead back when the play Getafe at the Mestalla on Sunday.
Before the late incidents, there was little to separate Barca and Zaragoza.
On their march to this season's Copa del Rey final, Zaragoza have ousted both Barca and Real Madrid and they proved those two successes were no flukes with another determined display.
The home side kept a close rein on Barca's star-studded strikeforce, so much so that the visitors did not have an effort of note in the first half.
Zaragoza were hardly productive going forward either though, and their sole chance in the first half saw Alvaro head a Ruben Cani corner over in the 39th minute.
The second half was a similar story with Barca substitute Van Bommel firing a rare shot from either side just over the bar from 30 yards out in the 61st minute.
It was looking increasingly likely that the match would finish goalless - until the late events changed the course of the contest.
The disturbing events may have just worked to Barcelona's advantage with Zaragoza's players losing some of their concentration.
