Fiorentina must reschedule their match with Cagliari, as it was abandoned after 29 minutes due to gale force winds.
The Viola were eager for a result to hang on to fourth place, but were forced to play without their talisman Luca Toni due to a recurring ankle injury, so Valeri Bojinov was given the nod. Cagliari's confidence was high after a shock 1-0 win away to Livorno, although Massimo Gobbi and Michele Canini were suspended.
High winds reaching 100km per hour were buffeting Sardinia and there were fears the match would have to be called off, as the ball's movement through the air was affected by the conditions.
Fiorentina had the first chance with Bojinov, who took advantage of the wind factor that prompted a defensive error, but Antonio Chimenti smothered his effort.
Luis Jimenez tested Chimenti with a long-range strike, then he set up a counter-attack that Bojinov ballooned over the bar when he was off balance.
The conditions were causing some curious problems, as a Cagliari teammate had to pin down the ball for a free kick in a rugby style to stop it rolling away by itself. From that set-piece, Daniele Conti's fierce strike was tipped over the bar.
Conticchio was accidentally kicked in the chin by Manuel Pasqual and had to make way for Budel.
The conditions became worse and began to endanger the fans, as a piece of plexiglass around the pitch came loose and had to be removed, so referee Rodomonti suspended play after 29 minutes due to concerns over safety.
After a 15 minute break, both teams and the officials agreed to abandon the match. The remaining 61 minutes will be played at a later date.
