ROME, March 20 (Reuters) - Real Madrid are targeting AC Milan's Carlo Ancelotti to succeed coach Juan Ramon Lopez Caro, the vice-president of the Italian club has revealed.
'Yes, it's true. Real Madrid are interested (in Ancelotti),' Adriano Galliani was quoted as saying in La Gazzetta dello Sport on Monday.
'But I'm willing to make a bet that he will still be the coach of AC Milan next season.'
Under new president Fernando Martin, Real are looking for a coach to take them back to the top of the European pecking-order.
The nine-times European champions were eliminated in the first knockout round of the Champions League earlier this month and languish 11 points behind Spanish first division leaders Barcelona after a 0-0 draw with Real Betis on Sunday.
Ancelotti, who has also coached Parma and Juventus, has enjoyed a series of successes, including the 2003 Champions League and the 2004 Serie A title, since taking charge of Milan in November 2001.
Milan's erratic start the season prompted speculation that the 46-year-old might be on the way out, but Galliani said his job was safe after a recent run of good results has taken them into the quarter-finals of the Champions League and consolidated second place in Serie A.
'He will stay at Milan for many years to come. We don't sell our best players, so I don't see why we should let our best coaches go either,' Galliani said.
'Our results over the past five years put us at the top of UEFA's rankings. There's no reason in the world to change.'
