Inter are ready to reward Alvaro Recoba with a new contract after he scored a brace in the 3-1 win over Lazio.
“We’ll soon meet up with regard to his signature,” said President Giacinto Facchetti. “We have the need for a player who scores and can create opportunities like him.”
Recoba, whose current deal expires in the summer, was the Nerazzurri’s match-winner on Sunday after being given a starting shirt following his return to full fitness.
“Every now and again I wake up,” joked the inconsistent Recoba. “I’ve had to miss a part of the season because of injury, but I’m ready to contribute now.
“We played okay in the first half, but much better after the break. I just look to give the best of myself to the team.
“We might not be able to catch Juventus in the table now, but we can go far in the Champions League.
“I hope to have two great months in order to get the satisfaction of winning things that I have so far not had the opportunity to do so.”
El Chino, who is believed to be set to sign a new two-year contract at the San Siro, is a favourite of owner Massimo Moratti.
However, he has had problems convincing boss Roberto Mancini of his abilities, as Mancio again outlined.
“This is still not the best Recoba,” stated the demanding tactician. “He can do much more than what he has shown.
“Recoba is a player of great quality and must take advantage of that fact during every game. He can’t just perform in one game and not in another four.”
