Coppa: Solari ruins Galeone debut Wednesday 22 March, 2006

Santiago Solari's first goal for Inter proved decisive in the 1-0 Coppa Italia semi-final first leg win, wrecking Udinese boss Giovanni Galeone's debut.

The Nerazzurri were hoping to defend their trophy and faced a Friuli side that is struggling badly in Serie A and was knocked out of the UEFA Cup last week.


As expected, the home side had a bright start and Obafemi Martins struck the side-netting on a Santiago Solari assist before Morgan De Sanctis rushed out to close down the Nigerian as he ran on to Cristiano Zanetti’s through ball.


The goalkeeper was also called into a point-blank save on Julio Cruz’s header and youth team player Andreolli just failed to make the most of a corner kick at the back post.


Inter should’ve taken the lead after 18 minutes when ex-Udinese man David Pizarro’s strike from distance was turned round the upright. From the resulting corner kick, Walter Samuel somehow managed to balloon his header over the bar from close range.


It didn’t matter, as 120 seconds later Santiago Solari broke the deadlock. It was a well-worked team move with several players involved before the unmarked former Real Madrid midfielder backheeled in a low Martins cross.


Julio Cesar returned to the Inter posts after several weeks out and fumbled a corner, but the Udinese players were unable to pounce on the error.


Cesare Natali’s backpass almost caused problems for De Sanctis, while Valerio Bertotto performed a crucial tackle as Cruz and Martins sliced up the Udinese back line.


Debutant Coach Galeone made two changes at half-time, introducing Vincent Candela and teenage defender Zapata.


The visitors had their first real chance after the restart with Julio Cruz beating away a spectacular overhead kick from Paulo Barreto.


De Sanctis was at full stretch for a fantastic save on Samuel’s header into the turf, but Julio Cesar proved a little nervy on his comeback, fumbling a Tissone piledriver from distance.


Udinese should’ve equalised on 66 minutes, as Julio Cesar rushed out to close down Barreto and completely missed the ball, but the striker slipped when all he had to do was angle it into a totally empty net.


Galeone’s men were more effective as time wore on, so Roberto Mancini threw on Cesar Aparecido and Dejan Stankovic. It proved a smart change, as moments later De Sanctis had his palms stung by a missile of a shot from the Serb. From the resulting corner kick, he made a double save on the Sinisa Mihajlovic set-piece and a header back into the centre.


Jose Luis Vidigal nodded a Roberto Baronio set-piece over from close range, but Udinese couldn’t find a way back into the game and must win the second leg on April 12 to have any hope of reaching the Final.

Coppa: Palermo punish Roma Wednesday 22 March, 2006

Palermo fought back from a goal down to beat Roma 2-1 in the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final in Sicily.

It was a spectacular start to the match at the Stadio Barbera, as the rain-drenched pitch and windy conditions affected play.


Roma took the lead after 47 seconds when Edgar Alvarez found space down the right flank and crossed in for Simone Perrotta to fire home from six yards.


Less than three minutes later, Palermo had equalised thanks to a double error from the Giallorossi defence. Goalkeeper Gianluca Curci could only parry Massimo Mutarelli’s strike in the mud around his area and Cesare Bovo cleared it straight into the path of Franco Brienza.


It was a hectic opening to the game and moments later Federico Agliardi got down to turn another Perrotta effort round the post, then Fabio Grosso’s shot was smothered and Alberto Aquilani curled over the bar.


Grosso went off with an injury after just 24 minutes and there were Rosanero penalty appeals for an Amantino Mancini handling offence, but the referee judged it to be involuntary.


After the break, Curci did well to push away a Brienza effort following Philippe Mexes’ error, while Agliardi had to punch a fierce right-foot Alvarez strike.


Palermo took the lead for the first time on 69 minutes, as Roma struggled to clear a long-running move. Eventually Cristian Zaccardo’s cross was touched on by Denis Godeas for Mutarelli to come sliding in from six yards.


Teenager Stefano Okaka, who won’t turn 17 until August, nodded an Aleandro Rosi cross over the bar, although he had been flagged for a tight offside position.


Agliardi proved crucial as he flew to fingertip a Houssine Kharja piledriver out from under the crossbar in the final stages, maintaining Palermo’s slender lead. There was more bad news for Roma, who saw Perrotta require treatment for a knee injury in stoppages.


The second leg is at the Stadio Olimpico on April 12 to decide who’ll go into the Final and face the winners of Inter-Udinese.
