TROUBLED Aston Villa will turn to Claudio Ranieri if David O'Leary is sacked after his dramatic nosedive.
The former Chelsea chief is admired by veteran Villa chairman Doug Ellis, who is considering boss O'Leary's future after bad results including the 5-0 weekend thrashing by Arsenal - and growing discontent among the fans who have turned against the Irishman.
Ranieri, dubbed The Tinkerman in his time at Stamford Bridge, is waiting for his chance to return to the Premiership after a poor spell in Spain with former club Valencia.
The Italian had his own spy watching Villa's thumping at Highbury as he heard rumours he is the favourite to succeed O'Leary if Ellis (right) loses faith.
O'Leary is heading for an endof- season review with Ellis and could be axed, especially if his side fail to fire in derbies against strugglers West Brom and Birmingham.
Ellis is unlikely to sack O'Leary during the season. But his future is shrouded in doubt, with the boss appealing for more funds and the chairman not sure about backing him.

Ellis is convinced the young players groomed through his youth system are good enough, while O'Leary has used the inexperience of his side as an excuse.
With the pair on different tracks a parting of the ways looks inevitable, although the timing is crucial as Villa are still not sure of Premiership safety.
