Suns star Amaré Stoudemire will make his comeback for USA Basketball in July and could play in the world championships in August if all goes well with his rehabilitation, senior men's team Managing Director Jerry Colangelo said.
Stoudemire underwent season-ending right knee surgery April 5 and got off crutches Sunday. He is two weeks into a rehabilitation program that is targeted for him to resume all basketball activity in July, just before USA Basketball opens camp in Las Vegas on July 19.
Colangelo, also the Suns' CEO and chairman, met with Stoudemire last week to go over objectives and plans.
He definitely is going to do that," Colangelo said. "Really, it's part of his rehabilitation. It's going to be perfect for him.
"Unless there is some major thing that happens in the way of a setback, the program is designed so he's able to participate full-bore in training camp. Therefore, there's nothing to prevent him from playing in exhibition games and the world championship. All that should prepare him well for Suns training camp and the season."
Stoudemire joined the Suns for a game for the first time since he left the team during a late March road trip.
"We're going to wait and see how everything feels but hopefully I'll be there," Stoudemire said.
USA Basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski attended Monday's Suns game after meeting with his USA assistant, Mike D'Antoni, during the day.
