Zanetti explains Inter ambush Monday 10 April, 2006

Inter midfielder Cristiano Zanetti has relived the tension filled moments when his teammates and himself were attacked by disgruntled fans.
Around 100 Nerazzurri followers awaited the squad at Malpensa airport in the early hours of Sunday morning, following the Ascoli win, to contest the side after their midweek Champions League exit.
Verbal insults were aimed at the players before a small section of fans started throwing objects, one which caused a cut to the Italian international’s head.
“We had gone through the border controls and there was a group of fans who limited themselves to the odd ironic comment,” Zanetti told the Controcampo publication on Monday.
“They were basically the same sort of comments that we had already heard on our return from Villarreal.
“We thought it was all over until we got to the car park to retrieve our cars. There was about 100 people there who were insulting us and throwing stones. One of these hit me.
“I was very concerned as nothing like that had ever happened before.”
There were claims that Zanetti had been targeted specifically by fans for accepting to join rivals Juventus at the end of the season.
But the former Roma player has dismissed that suggestion, insisting he was just unfortunate to have been the only one hurt in the incident.
“I don’t think Juventus had anything to do with it,” he added. “After all, I wasn’t the only player in the car park.
“There was also Javier Zanetti, Sinisa Mihajlovic, Pierre Wome and someone else I think,” he continued.
Meanwhile, unconfirmed rumours on Monday suggest that the Milan derby could be switched from Friday evening to an afternoon kick-off.
The authorities are concerned that Nerazzurri fans could use the event to cause more unrest, especially after last season’s abandoned Champions League derby. |
