Young admits World Cup dream is over
Charlton captain Luke Young appears to have ruled himself out of the England squad for this summer's World Cup finals.
The 26-year-old right-back suffered an ankle injury against West Ham on April 2, and was at The Valley on Saturday watching his side play out a goalless draw with Everton, his lower leg in a protective cast.
Asked when he expected to be back, Young told the Daily Star: 'It will probably be next season. I haven't had an operation but it doesn't look good.'
Young's verdict was in contrast to the optimism of Addicks boss Alan Curbishley, who said after the Everton game he still thought his skipper had a chance of being on the plane to Germany.
'We think we know what he has done. The last time he had a similar injury, he was out for five or six weeks,' the manager said.
'But we felt we did not treat it properly, so we do not think this time it will be too long.
'We think it may be about three weeks. He may just about be back for the end of the season, which I would love him to be.
'I think he needs to be back to force the issue in the England squad. So we hope it will be only three to four weeks, but it is a disappointment for him.'
