Coppa: Solari powers Inter to Final Tuesday 11 April, 2006

Inter will have the chance to retain their Coppa Italia crown after qualifying for this year’s Final following today’s 2-2 draw at Udinese.
Already 1-0 up from the first leg at the San Siro, the Nerazzurri basically wrapped things up after just eight minutes of the return with an early away goal in this afternoon’s clash.
Santiago Solari, who grabbed the stylish back-heeled winner in the previous encounter, rippled the net yet again after he tucked home a Pierre Wome cross which was helped along by Julio Cruz.
That goal left Udinese - who started the game with a trident strike force of Vincenzo Iaquinta, Simone Pepe and Fausto Rossini - with the task of having to respond with three of their own for qualification.
Udinese looked to react quickly from that setback, but were finding it tough against an Inter side who now felt no need to take unnecessary risks against a Friuli outfit who have had a campaign to forget.
Christian Obodo tried his luck for the home boys on 13 minutes, yet his shot was of no concern to Julio Cesar on his return to net-minder duty.
The Brazilian, who has lost his place in the side to veteran Francesco Toldo in Serie A, was then handed the simple task of stopping a comfortable long-range effort from Valerio Bertotto before drinks were taken at half-time.
The Bianconeri started the second period brightly and had a penalty claim rejected on 51 minutes when Iaquinta fell in the area. Then just seven minutes later, Roberto Baronio connected perfectly with the ball but his effort from distance was off target.
Inter responded by twice threatening to double their lead thanks to their Argentine contingent. Cruz shot over the bar from a good position after a poor Bertotto clearance, while Morgan De Sanctis expertly denied Walter Samuel from firstly a header and then a left-footed strike.
Udinese boss Giovanni Galeone used all his substitutes quickly after the break, but Inter replied by making things even tougher by taking off Alvaro Recoba and Solari, in favour of introducing the defensive duo of Giuseppe Favalli and Sinisa Mihajlovic.
Game over? Definitely not as Udinese leveled the match up in the 83rd minute with Obodo. He burst through both Marco Materazzi and Nicolas Burdisso to fire past Julio Cesar. The Nigerian then went desperately close to making it 2-1 just 120 seconds later with a shot from the edge of the area.
Former Udinese player David Pizarro, who was constantly heckled throughout by the crowd, restored Inter’s lead though in minute 86, only for Udinese to respond yet again. A Materazzi challenge on Iaquinta resulted in a penalty which the latter transformed. That strike avoided defeat on the day but not on aggregate as Inter collected a 3-2 victory.
The Nerazzurri will now play either Palermo or Roma in this year’s Final. Those two sides meet on Wednesday with the Rosanero looking to defend a 2-1 advantage.
