Villarreal CF centre-back Gonzalo Rodri'guez will miss the remainder of his side's UEFA Champions League campaign after tearing ligaments in his left ankle. The Spanish side travel to London to face Arsenal FC in their semi-final first leg on Wednesday, with the return fixture six days later.
Eight-week absence
Villarreal said the Argentine international would need up to eight weeks before he could train again, making him extremely doubtful for the FIFA World Cup. The 22-year-old sustained the injury in Friday's Primera Divisio'n defeat against fellow UEFA Champions League contenders FC Barcelona, whom Villarreal could meet in the final on 17 May. Rodri'guez has been a regular in Manuel Pellegrini's side this season, featuring in nine of Villarreal's ten matches from the group stage onwards.
Pen~a ruled out
Another centre-back, Juan Manuel Pen~a, will also miss Wednesday's match after straining knee ligaments against Barc,a. The club said the Bolivian international, who has played eight times in the competition this season, is also doubtful for the return leg at El Madrigal.
