Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is to visit Jacky Chu Chun-kwok, the policeman left in a near-vegetative state after being stabbed in the neck.
Solskjaer, who will be in Hong Kong for two days next month for the launch of the Manchester United Soccer School, is to see the injured constable in hospital.
The Norwegian soccer player was told about the plight of the wounded officer - who is an avid fan of the Premier League giants - by a Manchester United representative in Hong Kong.
The representative said the exact arrangements for the hospital visit have yet to be sorted out.
Solskjaer, who has overcome a knee injury nightmare that has stretched over almost two years, is one of the most popular players among Manchester United supporters and scored the winning goal in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich in 1999.
Constable Chu's wife, Chu Choi Yin-ping, was delighted. "[He] always said he wanted to go to Manchester to see them play,"
Mrs Chu also said her husband - who has not been able to talk since he was wounded - used to chat with her about his favourite football team and favourite players.
"He mentioned to me players like Ruud van Nistelrooy, Wayne Rooney, as well as some other players who I don't really recognise. He also kept telling me about [team manager] Sir Alex Ferguson."
She said the family would tell the injured constable about Solskjaer's visit and would prepare a Manchester United jersey with the player's name printed on it ahead of the visit.
"[Jacky] has a few Manchester United jerseys at home, but he treasured them so much he rarely wears them," said Mrs Chu.
The family has begun showing videotapes of matches involving Manchester United at Constable Chu's ward hoping to stimulate his brain, and Mrs Chu said her husband's eyes opened wider than usual.
"When we played the tapes for the first time he paid great attention, but he wasn't that interested when we replayed the videos," she said.
Constable Chu was left in a near-vegetative state because of brain damage after he was stabbed in the neck while on patrol in Cheung Sha Wan nine months ago. His attacker, 23-year-old Liu Chi-yung, was sentenced to six years in jail last Tuesday. |
