Luis Felipe Scolari has emerged as the new favourite for the England job after the FA realised that nobody wanted Steve McClaren.
The Boro boss had looked set to get the nod simply because the panel could not agree on an outstanding candidate, but lack of support from the media and the public could see them think again.
Portugal boss Scolari has always been the choice of Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein, who has pushed strongly for the man who won the World Cup with Brazil.
Dein has fought against appointing the continuity candidate in McClaren, who is nobody's favourite but the least offensive alternative.
The panel will meet for the final time on Wednesday to make a decision, with Noel White and Dave Richards likely to have to climb down on their insistence on an English manager.
