Chan for Cup, not Chongqing
Buler Rangers defender Chan Wai-ho has turned down a trial offer with China Super League side Chongqing Li Fan because of his commitment to the Hong Kong team in the forthcoming Carlsberg Cup.
The Hong Kong international confirmed yesterday that he had been approached by Li Fan, who invited him to go to Chongqing for a trial session.
"They want me to go there as soon as possible and I see this as a good opportunity to enrich my football experience," said the 23-year-old at yesterday's first training session for the event.
"However, after discussion with the Hong Kong team coach, I decided to stay with the Hong Kong team for the training camp because I really want to play for Hong Kong in the Cup. I know the opportunity does not come that often but maybe I can go to Chongqing at a later stage."
The China Super League, which kicks off in March, has given a deadline for player registration as the end of this week. But there will be a second transfer period in the middle of the season in July.
Previously, another Hong Kong team member, Fan Chun-yip, had caught the attention of China Super League side Liaoning. But the Happy Valley goalkeeper said he preferred to help his club win the all-important First Division league title before considering other options on the mainland.
A recent change of rules means that the China Super League now allows Hong Kong players to play in China and not count against the overseas players quota.
Chairman of the Hong Kong Football Association, Martin Hong Po-kui, confirmed yesterday that each China Super League team would now be allowed to register one Hong Kong player as a domestic player.
"A Hong Kong player will not occupy their quota on foreign players. This means more China Super League sides will consider players from Hong Kong provided that they are good enough," he said. |
