Wenger angry as Diaby faces long lay-off
Abou Diaby will be out for “six to nine months” after seriously injuring his ankle at the Stadium of Light on Monday and Arsène Wenger will look into legal action over the tackle that hurt the French midfielder.
Sunderland substitute Dan Smith received a yellow card for his challenge on Diaby in the dying minutes of a game Arsenal were leading 3-0. Arsène Wenger was angry at the time and his concern had not dissipated at the press conference on Wednesday ahead of the game at Manchester City.
“We have had a big blow with Diaby,” he said, “The injury is very bad. He has a fractured ankle and ruptured ligaments. He needed surgery straight away last night at 9pm and we had to make a quick decision on him.
"It is just a very bad injury. I count six to nine months to play again and be completely fit.
“I'm very upset and disappointed with the tackle. Having watched it again I just feel I will not leave the case there.
“It's a career threatening tackle and I will take legal advice on that to see how far I can go.
"There is an idea in England that you have to kick Arsenal to beat them. I knew at some stage this kind of accident would happen. I just don't accept it. I have nothing against the physical game, I love the physical game.
"But this boy is just 19 years old, at the start of his career, and this injury is tremendously serious.”
