Defoe in Magpies link
Newcastle United manager Glenn Roeder has refused to rule out a summer move for Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe.
The 23-year-old is rumoured to be on his way out of White Hart Lane after Spurs spent £10.9million on Bulgaria striker Dimitar Berbatov.
The Magpies are keen to bring in a new goalscorer following Alan Shearer's retirement and Roeder used to work with Defoe at West Ham, so almost inevitably the forward has been linked with a move to St James' Park.
Roeder insisted no deal was imminent, but admitted signing Defoe was not out of the question.
"Newcastle will always be linked with the top players," he told the Evening Chronicle.
"He was with me for two seasons and was barely 18 when I first worked with him.
"He worked very hard and did very well for me and is a likeable lad who is good to work with.
"But he is one of many players linked with us and I cannot say 'yes' or 'no' about anyone at the moment.
"All I can say is that I am compiling a list of players in different departments."
