Johnson dreaming of Everton offer

ANDREW JOHNSON, the Crystal Palace forward, will leave the England camp today and hold talks with Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic during the next 48 hours over an £8.5 million move. Johnson has been invited to fly north in a helicopter laid on by Dave Whelan, Wigan’s multimillionaire owner, but the 25-year-old is still waiting to see whether Everton are still in contention for his signature.

Bolton had a club-record bid accepted by Palace yesterday after matching the offer that Wigan made on Tuesday. Sam Allardyce, the Bolton manager, is expected to meet Johnson over the weekend to persuade him that he could advance his international ambitions at the Reebok Stadium, but his board, having raised their bid from an initial £7 million, remain cautious over personal terms for the player, who may be offered more than £45,000 a week to join Wigan.

Everton are Johnson’s preference among the three clubs who were competing for his signature last week, but it is uncertain whether they could find the resources to match the bids from Bolton and Wigan.

Wigan have also agreed a £5.5 million fee with Chelsea for Robert Huth, but the Germany defender intends to wait until after the World Cup finals before making a decision on his future. Newcastle United are also said to be interested.

Everton have reached agreement with Crystal Palace for the possible transfer of England striker Andrew Johnson, the Merseyside club said on Friday.

They have finalised a deal which could see 25-year-old Johnson, considered the best English striker outside the Premier League, become Everton's record signing.

British media said Everton had joined fellow top flight teams Wigan Athletic and Bolton Wanderers in making a bid of 8.5 million pounds ($15.89 million) for the prolific forward.

Johnson, who scored 15 goals in 34 league games in the second division last season, met Wigan manager Paul Jewell on Friday and Bolton's Sam Allardyce also wants to hold talks. However, Johnson is thought to favour a move to Everton and Friday's agreement between the clubs on a fee means he can now formally open talks about personal terms.

Johnson, who is on England's standby list for the World Cup finals in Germany, is expected to travel to Merseyside within the next 24 hours, the Everton website said.

Johnson to be Everton record signing as Moyes blows budget

Everton last night won the race to sign Andrew Johnson from Crystal Palace for a club record £8.5m, with the England striker agreeing to move to Goodison Park in preference to either Wigan Athletic or Bolton Wanderers.

The Merseysiders had seen their initial offer, worth £7.25m, rejected earlier in the week but after extensive discussions between the chairman Bill Kenwright, the manager David Moyes and the club's accountants, they submitted an improved bid yesterday. The fee represents a huge proportion of Moyes' summer transfer budget and may frustrate his attempts to sign a high-profile centre-half.

Johnson is due to complete the formalities of the move over the weekend, but he has agreed in principle to the personal terms on offer after discussing the move with Everton officials last night. The 25-year-old will meet with Moyes again today but his preference - first expressed last summer following Palace's relegation from the Premiership - had always been to move to Goodison Park, despite the fact that his other suitors were offering a more attractive financial package.
That would have seen his weekly salary rise from £24,000 to over £40,000, yet he has instead opted to fall within Everton's own stricter wage structure, most likely on a par with his future strike partner James Beattie, at around £30,000 a week. After 85 goals in 160 appearances at the Selhurst Park club, he is expected to be unveiled as the most expensive player in the Merseysiders' history next week.

The news will deflate Bolton and, in particular, Wigan. The Latics' chairman Dave Whelan had flown the Palace striker and his agent, Leon Angel, up from the England training camp near Watford yesterday morning to open negotiations face to face and Johnson spent time yesterday with the Wigan manager Paul Jewell at the JJB Stadium. Those talks had offered cause for optimism, with Whelan emerging encouraged from the meeting.

Yet those hopes were effectively dashed within hours as Everton improved their offer, with Johnson's desire to link up with his close friend Beattie prompting him not even to speak again with Bolton. Talks had been scheduled for early next week with Sam Allardyce and his chairman, Phil Gartside, though they must now switch their attentions elsewhere.

Johnson is currently on Sven-Goran Eriksson's standby list for the World Cup, despite not having been capped since last May's friendly win over the United States in Chicago. His sale represents a staggering piece of business by Palace who signed him as part of a package deal with Birmingham four years ago, in which Clinton Morrison moved to St Andrew's for £3.5m and Johnson, valued at only £750,000, switched to south London in part-exchange
