Boro closing in on O'Neill

MARTIN O’NEILL is in line to be Middlesbrough boss.
The former Celtic manager was at Boro’s training ground yesterday for more talks along with top agent Steve Kutner.
Chairman Steve Gibson has been forced into a re-think as Terry Venables — offered the job last week — has yet to give any indication if he will take it.
His involvement in Soccer Aid this week plus the possibility of a job with England have complicated the issue.
Venables, 63, also has business commitments and is believed to favour a return to the national set-up 10 years after he stood down as coach.
His dithering has set alarm bells ringing at the Riverside with several key players out of contract and the clock ticking towards next season.
So O’Neill, 54, was invited back to Teesside for more discussions with Gibson and chief executive Keith Lamb.
Previously his desire to commute from his Buckinghamshire home — where he has cared for his sick wife for 12 months — was seen as a problem.
The Irishman also wanted to bring his own backroom staff. That did not sit comfortably with Gibson who hoped the new man would groom skipper Gareth Southgate and Colin Cooper.
But O’Neill’s stance has softened and the odds on him being installed as Steve McClaren's successor have fallen dramatically. |
