Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Chelsea are to sign Portuguese goalkeeper Hilario, as revealed by skysports.com two weeks ago.
The 30-year-old is available on a Bosman free transfer as his contract with Madeiran outfit Nacional ends this summer.
He worked under Mourinho when the two were at Porto together and the Blues boss is convinced he is the ideal candidate to complement Petr Cech and Carlo Cudicini.
"I know that Hilario is intelligent and will help ensure that Chelsea, at the moment, have the best goalkeepers in the world," he explained.
"I have worked with him and think he has the perfect characteristics to integrate with our squad.
"He's very intelligent, perhaps more so than the majority of players, so to add this characteristic makes good sense."
The Portuguese tactician also went on to play down his interest in Portuguese wingers Simao Sabrosa and Ricardo Quaresma, both of whom have been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in recent weeks.
Mourinho conceded that he had created much of the speculation by publicly declaring his admiration for the duo, but insisted that his Blues squad was already well-stocked with high-quality widemen.
"Perhaps I'm to blame for this news story," he continued.
"When I said that Simao is a player that any coach would like to have, maybe I increased expectations.
"But it's difficult for Chelsea to be interested in any winger because we already have players like (Damien) Duff, Joe Cole and (Arjen) Robben in our squad." |
