David Beckham and Steven Gerrard have expressed their sympathy for Jermain Defoe after the striker missed out again on a major tournament.
Jermain had to pack his bags after Wayne Rooney was given the green light by medics to join up with the squad following the latest scan on his injured foot.
In the squad as stand-by for Germany, it’s another case of ‘so near yet so far’ for the 23-year-old who found himself in the same situation before the European Championships in 2004 and missed the final cut.
Skipper Beckham led the tributes at a press conference this morning. “It’s always hard when players have been in the squad all the way through,” he said.
“Jermain is one of the best strikers in Europe, there is no doubt about that. The goals he scores and the way he’s been training, he’s been top class.
"HE'LL BE SADLY MISSED BUT HE’S STILL ONE OF THE BEST IN EUROPE."
Liverpool midfielder Gerrard added: “Jermain has been really professional. He’s shown a great attitude in training and everyone knows he’s a fantastic talent.
“The players are really sad to see him go but the manager can only pick 23 players and unfortunately he misses out again.
“But his attitude, the way he’s trained and the way he’s been around the hotel – he’s been a credit to himself.”
