Robben: Team glory is most important
Arjen Robben took the plaudits after inspiring Holland to victory but insisted he is more interested in his team's success than personal glory.
The 22-year-old winger was in inspired form, scoring the only goal in the 1-0 win over Serbia & Montenegro and looking a different player from the one who was in and out of the Chelsea side last season.
Holland channelled most of their attacking moves through Robben and afterwards Serbia coach Ilija Petkovic predicted the winger will be one of the players of the tournament.
Robben said: "It's nice to hear, it's a good compliment but it's no more pressure than normal on me.
"I want to do well for the team but for me it's not important for me or anyone else to be regarded as the player of the tournament. I would prefer to win the cup."
As to the difference in playing for country rather than club, Robben insisted there is none.
He added: "It doesn't make a difference playing for Chelsea or the national team. Yes I get a lot of freedom but I have to be disciplined as well and play my part defensively, and I get that freedom from any manager I play for.
"We knew beforehand it was going to be a difficult game against strong opponents but we were in control for most of it, though they had some opportunities.
"We were very happy to score quite early and I think we can be satisfied overall, especially given the conditions.
"You could see in the second half the heat affected both teams, the speed of the game was much slower."
Robben scored in the 18th minute, seizing Robin van Persie's through ball, and overall the performance pleased Holland coach Marco van Basten.
He said: "I'm happy because it was not an easy game but we created a lot of chances and did not give many away.
"I watched the game between Argentina and the Ivory Coast and it was played at a very high level so we will have to give everything to get a result against both these opponents." |
