Former Azzurri Coach Arrigo Sacchi has warned that Italy face a tough task to beat Ghana this evening.
“The Ghanaian side will make us work hard for every ball,” said the tactician on the ‘Radio anch’io sport’ show.
“I fear that the intense heat in Germany at the moment could also provide a helping hand for the African nation.”Sacchi is no stranger to the World Cup atmosphere, as he took the Azzurri to the Final of USA ’94 in sweltering heat only to eventually lose out on penalties to Brazil.
This will be the first meeting between the two sides, although Italy have faced Ghana twice at Olympic level and failed to win. At Atlanta ’96, the Africans emerged 3-2 winners with Sami Kuffour and goalkeeper Richard Kingston part of the squad. In Athens 2004, the Azzurri – including Alberto Gilardino and Daniele De Rossi – fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2.
The senior Italy side has never lost against an African nation, managing 10 victories and four draws, including friendlies.
Meanwhile, Sacchi also voiced his opinion on the Calciopoli scandal rocking Italian football and agreed with Franz Beckenbauer that the issue could affect the squad.
“The entire football environment is on trial and we cannot think that the Nazionale can wash its conscience clean of what has happened. You could see the situation wasn’t normal and there was talk of psychological weakness when dealing with the big clubs. At times, the people who were being evaluated put those evaluating the issues in their positions. This was also abnormal.” |
