Inter prepare Riquelme swoop Sunday 25 June, 2006

Inter have stepped up their interest in Argentine World Cup star Juan Roman Riquelme with a £12.3m offer.
The Villarreal midfielder has long been tipped as the number one choice to replace Juan Sebastian Veron following his move to Estudiantes, especially with Emerson and Daniele De Rossi seemingly out of reach.
The ‘Gazzetta dello Sport’ newspaper today suggests that there is a clause in Riquelme’s contract allowing him to leave his Liga club for £12.3m, some of which would go to his previous side, Barcelona.
Riquelme has been a key figure in Argentina’s successful World Cup campaign so far and his performances have also impressed other sides, as Inter face competition from Real Madrid.
If the midfielder, who turned 28 yesterday, does arrive at San Siro, then Inter will be able to sell Chilean David Pizarro to Roma as part of their bid for Amantino Mancini.
This would create Roberto Mancini’s favoured 4-4-2 system with Luis Figo and Mancini on the flanks and a central midfield partnership of Argentines Riquelme and Esteban Cambiasso. Following experimentation with a three-man defence, the introduction of Dejan Stankovic could also give them an extra dimension.
Villarreal could bring down the price-tag a little if Marco Materazzi were included in the deal, but the Nerazzurri insist the defender is not for sale. |
