Nesta to miss Ukraine tie

Andrea Barzagli looks likely to start against Ukraine after Italy stopper Alessandro Nesta was basically ruled out of the tie by team doctors.
Nesta picked up an injury in the 2-0 win over the Czech Republic and, although he is on the road to recovery, he is a major doubt for Friday’s quarter-final.
“Nesta is continuing with the rehabilitation plan which we designed for him,” stated Azzurri medic Enrico Castellacci.
“He is also undergoing a number of physiotherapy sessions and is working on strengthening his muscles.
“His improvement is gradual and we obviously want him to get fit as soon as possible, but without taking any risks for the player.
“Friday’s game? It won’t be easy to have him ready in time. He’ll undergo a number of tests on Wednesday to see how things stand.
“We’re calm and in constant contact with the Milan medical staff.”
Palermo stopper Barzagli is now likely to start alongside Fabio Cannavaro against Andriy Shevchenko and Co.
The former Under-21 international will probably get the nod as Marco Materazzi is suspended following his dismissal against Australia. |
