United are lining up a move for £5million-rated Ukraine World Cup midfielder Maxim Kalinichenko. Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been impressed by the Spartak Moscow man, 26, who helped his country into the quarter-finals. United officials are understood to have contacted their counterparts at Kalinichenko's Russian club. Spartak have indicated their readiness to sit down and discuss terms.

Meanwhile, according to the Mail on Sunday, Chelsea's Michael Essien has urged £5million-rated Freddy Adu to snub United and the USA to join him at Chelsea. The 17-year-old DC United midfielder is at the centre of a tug-of-war between Jose Mourinho and Sir Alex Ferguson.
The tabloid also reports that Arsenal will try to hijack United's bid for Michael Carrick by selling Ashley Cole to Chelsea for £20million and using the proceeds to buy the England midfielder from arch-rivals Tottenham.
The News of the World features quotes from Juan Riquelme saying he will snub a big money move to Old Trafford. And another United target Franck Ribery has also dashed Sir Alex Ferguson's hopes by declaring he wants to join Lyon.
The tabloid reckons Sir Alex will splash £14m on Benfica winger Simao Sabrosa - if they lose Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid.
The People contradicts the report insisting United will make a £4m move for Sabrosa's Portuguese team-mate Armando Petit if Ronaldo makes the switch to the Bernabeu. The tabloid also claims that 17-year-old Derby midfielder Giles Barnes is on his way to United. Barnes is regarded as the finest young talent in the Championship and could be picked up for around £2m.
Bolton boss Sam Allardyce is set to make a cheeky £2m bid for Darren Fletcher, according to The People.
In World Cup news, all the tabloids centre on Wayne Rooney's sending off and Cristiano Ronaldo's part in it. Ronaldo was condemned by Rooney's England team-mates who accused the Portuguese and United winger of getting the England striker sent off.
In the Sunday Mirror, David Beckham, Gary Neville and Steven Gerrard all urge the nation not to make Rooney Public Enemy No.1 for his red-card shame at the World Cup and Alan Shearer says Rooney should "stick one" on his United team-mate when the pair next meet.
