MEMORIES OF MATERAZZI
Former Everton midfielder Barry Horne has recalled accounts of Marco Materazzi's time at Everton.
The pair weren't at Everton at the same time, but Horne has heard plenty about the Italian World Cup winner.
Horne explained: "Materazzi got booked 12 times and sent off three times during his season at Everton so it all turned out a bit chaotic for him and everyone else.
"Playing-wise, our paths just missed crossing but, even though I'd moved on by the time he joined, I remained an Everton fan and kept in touch with my old team-mates.
"I certainly don't remember too many Everton players I talked to suggesting Materazzi had untapped potential or latent talent but watching him in the World Cup definitely proved that you really never know about people or what they can achieve."
Tony Grant, a former team-mate of Materazzi during the 1998/9 season, said: "In training sessions he was pinging these 60-yard around and you could see he was top class.
"The only problem was when you tried to go round him. He'd take you down at the legs, no worries, and was determined no one would get past."
He concluded: "The two things I remember about Marco are that he was a very good player - and an absolute lunatic!" |
